GENERAL INFORMATION ON KNYSNA
Straddling the Garden Route like a colossus, with the Indian ocean at its feet and the Outeniqua
Mountains at its back, Knysna is a must-see for any traveller. Surrounded by South Africa's largest
remaining natural forest and blessed by a spectacular, rugged coastline, safe beaches and a large
lagoon – Knysna has it all for people who enjoy the outdoor life.
Delicious food (think Oysters!), interesting shops, numerous activities & attractions,
plenty of arts, crafts & african curios as well as a pulsating nightlife offers something for everyone.
You can even take a township tour and visit one of the largest Rastafarian communities in South Africa.
If you like beer you have to try the excellent brews - like Bosun's Bitter - which are widely available
and produced at the local Mitchell’s Brewery.
Knysna has a mild climate tempered by the warm Indian Ocean and receives 770mm of rain on average
every year (with the least rainfall during winter).
Attractions & Activities
Knysna is surrounded by patches of state forest with paths that vary in length, making for excellent hiking
as well as mountain biking trails winding through the magnificent natural beauty of the forest.
For the enthusiastic bird watcher the area offers a diversity of sea, estuarine and forest birds.
The abudance of bird species can be observed all year round due to Knysna's variety of habitats.
Be sure to pick up a fishing permit from the local post office and spend a relaxing afternoon fishing
at the lagoon or off the rocks at Brenton-on-Sea.
Knysna Lagoon is actually an estuary, providing for both estuarine and deep sea fishing.
The lagoon is a water sport haven and bustles with activity from sailboards to kayaking and even large ocean
going yachts. Boats and canoes can be hired from various boating companies while ferries take
visitors around the lagoon.

Another popular activity is deep sea fishing or whale and
dolphin watching (especially from August to October). The Garden Route Coastline offers
some of the best whale watching points in the world.
The Knysna area also offers a number of Game Farms. Visit Botliers Game Farm between George and Mosselbay
or Buffalo Hills Game Reserve (35km from Knysna) for an unforgettable encounter with Africa's Big Five.
If you prefer up close and personal, make sure to visit the Knysna Elephant park where you can walk with, touch
and feed these majestic giants.
46km east of Knysna lies Monkeyland and Raptors for Africa, providing an informative, but more importantly
a fun experience for young and old.
Knysna offers visitors an unforgettable holiday experience, whether you are looking
for adventure or merely prefer relaxing in the sun, taking scenic drives or leisurely exploring
